An American Family History

Elizabeth Catherine Treahy Armstrong Cleveland Copley was the daughter of Barthlomew Treahy and Bridget Moran. The Shanagolden Parish Roman Catholic Baptism register has her baptism record. Cath. Trehy was baptized on July 24, 1825. Her sponsors were Patrick Ryan and Maria Carmody.

She moved to Canada with her parents when she was young.

When she was 19, she married James Armstrong on August 18, 1852 in Toronto at St. Paul's. The witnesses were Patrick Treahy, Owen Flynn, and Ellen Lymon. James was born in Ireland in 1816. He was a merchant.

Mary Armstrong was born in 1854.

At the time of the 1861 census, "Jas. and Kate Armstrong" were living in Toronto with her father. Jas was 45, Kate was 26 and Mary was 7. They were Presbyterian.

Before 1870, she married Russell Hooker Cleveland. Russell was born on July 13. 1824 in Skaneateles, Onondaga, New York. His parents were Lewis Wales Cleveland and Lucy Burrell.

In 1870 they were in Los Angeles. Russell was a carpenter.

They were in the 1880 census in San Diego. The census indicated that they had adopted Louisa R. Cleveland as their daughter. She was 8 years old and born in California. Her father was born in Italy and her mother in France. The census indicted that he was a farmer.

About 1885 when her brother, John Bartholomew's children came to San Diego from Ceylon, they lived with the Clevelands.

Russell died on October 26, 1893. He died after a buggy accident. He was buried at Mt. Hope cemetery.

In 1897 and 1900 Mrs. Russell Cleveland was listed in the San Diego City Directory living at 521 Milton Avenue. The John Treahy family lived at 525 Milton Avenue.

The 1900 census indicated that she had no children.

Catherine married widower,Andrew Jackson Copley. Andrew was born in December 18, 1829 in New York. Andrew's parents were Joseph Copley and Mary Hickok. He had been married before to Hannah Nattrass. At the time of the 1900 census 70 year old A. J. Copley was living with his son, Joseph, in San Diego.

Catherine died on November 9, 1903 of apoplexy. She is buried at Calvary Cemetery.

Andrew died on May 24, 1917 in Monterey, California.

Funeral services over the remains of the late Mrs. Catharine E. Copley will be held in Johnson and Connell's chapel this morning at 10 a.m.

Copley - In this city, Nov. 9, 1903, Catherine E., wife of A. J. Copley, a native of Ireland, aged 76 years.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral from Johnson & Connell's chapel, at 9:30 o'clock a.m. today; thence to St. Joseph's church where services will be held at 10 a.m.

Cleveland-In this city October 26, 1893, Russell Hooker Cleveland, age 69 years.
The funeral will take place from the family residence, No. 521 Milton Avenue, at 2 o'clock p.m. today. Friends are invited.

Russell Hooker Cleveland who has resided in San Diego for the past twenty-three years, died last night at his residence of Milton avenue. Death was the result of an accident, Mr. Cleveland bieng thrown from his carriage about three weeks ago, striking upon his head. He was 69 years of age and leaves a widow.
